first african in western art… January 13, 2007

first africanA couple of weeks ago, the three of us went to visit a monk that we’d met in one of the museums we visited. He was an American priest over here on some sort of exchange program. It turned out he lived in this fabulous monastery built around 1000 AD. One of the treasures of the monasery was a guided storyboard-type-thing that contained the first representation of an African in western art (it was the queen of Sheba). So much history right there, it was amazing.

More than that though, I was really impressed at his genuinely Christian heart. Not only did he show us very gracious hospitality, he was genuinely excited to be there, doing the ministry because, as he said “Jesus changed my life!” This was encouraging for me to hear because, as some of you know, I really believe that God has it in His heart to reconcile the Catholic church back to himself.
