He’s had a lot of great expiriences and written a couple of books. I think he really has a strong annointing of the presence of the Lord and I’ve heard a lot about him in the last few years. I had the priviledge last night of translating for him at our church service. What an honor!

Michael and Martin were here after spending some overtime in the office in preparation for U-turn, one of Tyler’s South African friends was here. After tea and lebkuchen were served, we just began to talk about our dreams for the future, our calling, and what church is like in all of our countries. I think all of us thought that the churches in each of our countries was in a state of disarray and it could be doing a lot more to help abate the crime in South Africa, preach the gospel to the lost effectively in America, or capture the essence of Jesus’ words here in Catholic Austria. I went to sleep with the feeling that it is possible to do Christ’s work, no matter how tough the situation is.
He was an American priest over here on some sort of exchange program. It turned out he lived in this fabulous monastery built around 1000 AD. One of the treasures of the monasery was a guided storyboard-type-thing that contained the first representation of an African in western art (it was the queen of Sheba). So much history right there, it was amazing.

More than that though, I was really impressed at his genuinely Christian heart. Not only did he show us very gracious hospitality, he was genuinely excited to be there, doing the ministry because, as he said “Jesus changed my life!” This was encouraging for me to hear because, as some of you know, I really believe that God has it in His heart to reconcile the Catholic church back to himself.

I’ve also been learning more and more that the kingdom of God is not so much a matter of a new program or another church service. Although these things are good, and I do enjoy the sense of accomplishment from a good day in the church office, most of the best times that I have come when I’m just acting like a Christian wherever I am.

It was actually ideal for circulating around Soviet prisons, if a guard suddenly came by, one could pop it in their mouth, their cup of coffee, really anything, and it wouldn’t be damaged because it was plastic and leather. Robert had smuggled several of them into Moscow himself.
